Aim training for beginners
Most people who decide to "work on their aim" open a target trainer, click for forty minutes, close it, and repeat that a few days later until they get bored. Nothing much changes, and the usual conclusion is that aim is something you either have or you don't. That conclusion is doing a lot of work it hasn't earned. What actually happened is that the session had no structure, no single thing being practised, and no way of telling improvement apart from a good streak.
This guide is about the structure. It covers the two motions that get lumped together under the word "aim", why short sessions are easier to learn from than long ones, how to pick a sensitivity and stop fiddling with it, how to read your two numbers together instead of separately, and a ten-minute routine you can run before you play anything else. Clicking and tracking are two different skills
A target that appears, waits, and disappears asks you for a single-click move: get the cursor from where it is to where the target is, stop, and press. The whole action is one committed movement plus a correction at the end. It is ballistic — you throw the cursor and then tidy up the last few pixels. The skill being trained is your sense of distance, and the failure mode is overshooting and then hunting around the target with small nervous adjustments.
A target that keeps moving asks for tracking: match the target's velocity and hold the cursor inside it while both of you are in motion. Nothing about that is ballistic. You are running a continuous correction loop, and the skill is smoothness rather than distance judgement. The failure mode is the opposite of the first one: you keep sawing left and right across the target because every correction is slightly too large.
These get better at different rates and they respond to different settings. Someone who has drilled only single clicks will feel oddly clumsy the first time a target drifts, and someone who has only tracked will overshoot badly on their first flick. If you have ten minutes, spend part of it on each rather than doing whichever one currently feels good. The one that feels bad is the one with room in it.
Why short, focused sessions beat long ones
The argument for a ten-minute session is not that longer practice is harmful. It's that a long session quietly stops being practice. Somewhere in the second half of a forty-minute block, most people slide into autopilot: the clicks keep happening, the score keeps ticking, and no decision is being made about how to move. At that point you are producing repetitions of whatever your habit already is, which is precisely what you sat down to change.
A short session also gives you cleaner numbers. Compare two runs from the same ten minutes and the conditions are similar — same chair, same warm-up state, same level of interest. Compare a run from minute three with a run from minute thirty-eight and you are measuring fatigue and boredom along with aim. If you want more practice in a day, do a second ten-minute block later rather than a twenty-minute block now.
One more practical reason: ten minutes is short enough that you will actually do it tomorrow. Consistency across two weeks does more than any single heroic session, and the only thing that reliably produces consistency is a session small enough to be easy to start.
Sensitivity and target distance
Sensitivity decides how much cursor movement you get per centimetre of hand movement, and the honest answer about the "best" value is that there isn't one. What matters is the relationship between your sensitivity, the size of your desk, and the distance the targets sit from each other.
A useful test: put your hand in a comfortable resting position and, without lifting the mouse, try to move the cursor from one corner of the play area to the opposite corner. If you run out of desk, your sensitivity is too low for the space you have. If a small twitch sends the cursor a third of the way across the screen, it is too high for fine correction. Somewhere between those two failures is a band of settings that all work, and inside that band the specific number matters much less than picking one and staying with it.
Target distance is the other half of the same equation. Short hops between nearby targets are mostly a wrist and finger movement, and higher sensitivity flatters them. Long crossings are an arm movement, and lower sensitivity flatters those. A trainer that mixes both distances will make any single sensitivity feel imperfect, which is normal — you are supposed to be learning the two motions, not tuning a setting until the motions become unnecessary.
The mistake to avoid is the sensitivity spiral: a bad run, a settings change, another bad run, another change. Every change resets the muscle habit you were building, so a week of tinkering produces a week of beginners' runs. Give any setting at least several sessions before you judge it.
Read your two numbers together, never separately
Average hit time on its own is easy to game. Click fast and loose, miss constantly, and the shots that do land will be quick ones, so the average looks excellent while your actual performance is poor. Accuracy on its own is just as easy to game in the other direction: creep the cursor onto every target with all the time in the world and you can push accuracy very high while being useless in anything that moves.
The pair is what tells you something. Read it like this:
- Fast time, low accuracy. You are committing to the movement but not finishing it. Slow the last part of the motion down — the arrival, not the travel — and let accuracy come up before you chase speed again.
- Slow time, high accuracy. You are confirming a shot you had already earned. Try pressing as soon as the cursor is inside the target instead of when it is centred; on most targets the centre is not worth the extra fifty milliseconds.
- Both improving. This is what real progress looks like, and it is usually slow and unglamorous — a few milliseconds and a percentage point at a time across sessions.
- Both getting worse mid-session. You are tired or you have stopped paying attention. End the session. The last four minutes of a bad run teach nothing.
Compare sessions, not runs. A single run is short enough that one lucky sequence or one sneeze can move the average noticeably. Write down the pair of numbers at the end of each session and look at the trend across a week or two.
Rough bands we recorded while testing this ourselves, shown as estimates rather than as records or targets to hit: on a mouse, newer players tend to settle somewhere in the 500–700 millisecond range for average hit time with accuracy in the high seventies, while players who have practised deliberately for a few weeks often reach the 350–450 millisecond range while holding accuracy above ninety percent. On a trackpad, expect both numbers to sit clearly outside those bands. This is simply what we saw on our own machines, and nothing here is a threshold you are supposed to reach.
What the timer is actually measuring
This part gets skipped in most aim advice and it matters, so here it is plainly. The number the game reports is the gap between the moment a target is drawn and the moment your click is handled by the browser. Several things live inside that gap and only some of them are you.
Your display shows a new frame at a fixed rate, so a target that "appears" is really a target that appears at the next refresh — a 60 Hz screen adds up to about sixteen milliseconds of waiting before you can possibly see it, and a faster panel adds less. Your mouse reports its state on its own schedule. Operating systems, browsers and background tabs all add small amounts of processing. Even the cable and the panel's own response add something.
None of that makes the measurement useless. It makes it relative. On the same computer, with the same screen and the same mouse, the hardware contribution stays roughly constant, so a drop of eighty milliseconds across two weeks is a real change in you. Across different hardware, it is not a fair comparison, and a number from a friend's machine tells you almost nothing about how you two compare.
The same caution applies in the other direction. We are not going to tell you that clicking targets makes you sharper, faster or better at anything outside a screen. What practice reliably does is make you better at the specific movement you practised, and more consistent at repeating it. That is a modest claim and it happens to be the true one.
A ten-minute routine
Run this in order. The clock matters less than the sequence.
- Two minutes, no score. Move the cursor between targets without pressing anything. You are waking up the arm and reminding yourself how far a given hand movement travels. Nothing you do here is being measured, which is the point.
- Three minutes, single clicks, accuracy first. One target at a time, deliberate arrival, press when the cursor is inside. If you miss, do not immediately re-click — pause for a beat, then take the next one properly. Hunting a missed target with three panic clicks is the habit you are here to remove.
- Three minutes, tracking. Stay inside a moving target and try to make your corrections smaller rather than faster. If you find yourself sawing side to side, deliberately let the cursor lag slightly behind the target and follow it rather than chasing it.
- Two minutes, mixed and honest. Play a normal run at the pace you'd actually use. This is the run whose two numbers you write down.
Do that four or five times a week for a fortnight before deciding whether anything is working. Keep the log short — date, average hit time, accuracy, one sentence about what felt wrong. That last field is the one that ends up being useful, because it turns "I'm inconsistent" into something specific enough to practise, like "I overshoot every target on the left half of the screen".
Common beginner mistakes
- Gripping the mouse hard. Tension makes small corrections worse and makes the whole session tiring. Notice your hand every couple of minutes and let it loosen.
- Practising only what you're good at. If your clicks are fine and tracking feels awful, tracking is where the ten minutes should mostly go.
- Changing two things at once. New sensitivity and new routine on the same day means you cannot attribute the result to either.
- Playing tired. Late-night sessions produce worse numbers and, worse than that, they teach sloppy movement that shows up when you are fresh.
- Treating one bad session as evidence. Everybody has days where the average sits eighty milliseconds off their normal. One session is a data point, not a verdict.
Questions players ask
How long should a beginner practise each day?
Ten focused minutes. An hour of half-attention clicking mostly reinforces whatever habit you already had. If you want more, do a second short block later in the day rather than one long one.
Is lower sensitivity better?
Not inherently. Lower gives finer control but needs desk space and bigger arm movements. Pick a setting that lets you cross the play area without lifting the mouse, then leave it alone for several sessions.
Why are my numbers worse on a laptop trackpad?
Short travel distance and no wrist anchor mean long moves have to be chained. It is a fine way to play; just compare trackpad sessions only against your own earlier trackpad sessions.
Does the measured time include things other than me?
Yes — display refresh, mouse polling and input processing all sit inside the number. That is why it is useful for tracking your own progress on one machine and not useful for comparing machines.
