Breakout angle control: the paddle is a curved surface
Most people play Breakout as a reflex test. Ball comes down, get the paddle underneath it, ball goes back up, repeat until it doesn't. Played that way the game is almost entirely out of your hands: you are keeping a rally alive and hoping it wanders into useful bricks.
It is a much better game once you realise you are not catching the ball. You are aiming it. Every single contact is a shot you chose, whether or not you meant to choose it, and the difference between a 400-point run and a 3,000-point run is almost entirely about which part of the paddle the ball touches.
The contact map, precisely
The paddle behaves as if it were curved. It looks like a flat bar, but the return angle depends on where along its length the ball lands, not on the angle the ball arrived at. Hitting the same spot twice gives you the same return twice, no matter how the ball got there.
The mapping runs from the middle outwards, and it is symmetrical:
- Dead centre sends the ball back close to vertical.
- A quarter of the way out from the middle returns it around fifteen degrees off vertical — a gentle, controllable slope.
- Halfway out gives you roughly thirty degrees, which is the workhorse shot for moving the ball across the board without losing height.
- The very tip tops out near sixty degrees off vertical. That is a flat, fast crossing shot that spends most of its energy going sideways and takes a long time to climb.
The paddle is 92 pixels wide on a board that is 640 across, so those bands are narrow: a quarter of the way out is about 11 pixels from the middle. Small differences in contact point are large differences in outcome, which is exactly why accidental angle control feels so random.
One consequence worth internalising: a centre hit is not a safe hit. A near-vertical return goes up, comes almost straight back down, and gives you a ball you can barely steer because it lands close to where it left. Beginners gravitate to the middle because it feels controlled. It is actually the shot with the least information in it.
Position early, then stop moving
Here is the habit that costs most players their runs. They watch the ball, wait to see where it is going, and then hurry the paddle across to meet it. Arriving at the last moment means the paddle is still travelling when contact happens, and you take whatever contact point you happen to land on.
The alternative is to work out the landing spot as early as possible, move once, and then be still. The moment the ball leaves the paddle you already know a great deal: it travels at a constant speed until the next paddle contact, brick and wall hits only flip its direction, and the side walls reflect it cleanly. Pick the landing spot, get there, and spend the remaining time deciding which part of the paddle you want under the ball rather than whether any part of it will be.
The input method matters here. With the mouse or a finger, the paddle jumps straight to your pointer, so being early costs nothing and you can fine-tune the contact point in the last half second. With the keyboard the paddle moves at a fixed rate and needs a bit over a second to cross the whole board, so you have to commit sooner and you will sometimes be caught out by a sixty-degree crossing shot. Neither is wrong. Just know which one you are playing.
Getting above the wall
The wall is five rows of nine bricks, forty-five in total. Rows are not worth the same: from the top down they pay fifty, forty, thirty, twenty and ten points, so a complete wall is 1,350 points and about two thirds of that value is stacked in the three rows furthest from you.
That is the whole argument for the tunnel. If you can get the ball above the wall, it starts ricocheting between the ceiling and the top row, eating the expensive bricks several at a time while you do nothing at all. It is the single highest-value thing you can do in this game and it is worth giving up points in the short term to set up.
How to actually drill one
Pick one column and commit to it. You need all five bricks in that column gone to open a chimney, and you get there by repeatedly returning the ball on a path that comes back up into the same vertical line. This means resisting the temptation to take the easy bricks somewhere else — a column that is four fifths cleared is worth nothing until the fifth brick goes.
An edge column is the most valuable target, because once the ball is above the wall the nearby side wall keeps folding it back into the gap and it stays up there longer. It is also the hardest to drill, since hitting the far edge of the board repeatedly means using the tips of the paddle, and tip shots are flat and slow to climb. A column two or three in from the edge is the sensible compromise while you are learning.
There is a second route that is worth knowing about mostly so you stop trying it: the wall does not reach the sides of the board, and there is a 28-pixel channel down each edge. In principle the ball can slip straight up that channel without touching a brick. In practice it needs to be travelling within about six degrees of vertical for the whole climb, which corresponds to a contact window of roughly five pixels either side of the paddle's centre. We have seen it happen. We have never managed to do it on purpose. Drill a column instead.
What happens once you're through
Do not relax. The ball comes back down eventually, usually at an angle you were not tracking because you spent ten seconds watching bricks disappear. Keep the paddle roughly under the chimney the whole time it is up there, because that is where it is most likely to reappear.
Figures we noted while drilling these angles ourselves, which makes them estimates, not records or benchmarks: clearing the first wall takes us somewhere between about seventy and a hundred and twenty seconds when nothing goes wrong, a successful tunnel typically strips eight to fifteen bricks before the ball drops back down, and most of our runs end on the third or fourth wall, where the ball is roughly a fifth to a third faster than it was on the first.
What actually changes the difficulty
Two things surprise people about how the speed works on this board, and both of them are good news.
First, the ball does not accelerate during a rally. Bricks and walls only change its direction. If a rally feels like it is speeding up, that is your attention narrowing, not the physics.
Second, every paddle contact resets the ball to the current level's speed. Whatever happened up in the bricks, the ball comes off your paddle at a known rate, so the timing you learned at the start of a level stays valid all the way through it.
Speed only rises when you clear an entire wall. Each new wall is about seven percent faster than the last, which sounds mild and compounds quickly — four walls in, the ball is moving roughly a third faster than it did on the opening serve, and the sixty-degree crossing shot that used to be manageable now arrives before you have finished moving. That is the point at which you should stop using the paddle tips except deliberately.
One more mechanical detail: at most one brick is destroyed per frame. Crossing the seam between two neighbouring bricks takes out one of them and bounces, rather than driving through both. It also means the ball can never wedge itself inside the wall.
The last ball
You get three. How you play the third one should be visibly different from how you played the first, and most players get this backwards — they tighten up, hug the centre and try to survive.
Surviving is not a scoring strategy. The run ends when the ball is gone, and no points are awarded for the rally itself. On your last ball:
- Stop using the tips. Flat shots travel a long way sideways and give you the least time to reposition. Trade the aggressive angles for quarter and half positions.
- Finish the chimney if you are close. One brick from a tunnel is worth taking a risk for. Three bricks away is not.
- Clear the bottom row deliberately. Ten points each is not the reason. The reason is that the empty band under the wall gives the ball room to come back down at an angle you can read, instead of ricocheting off brick undersides right above your paddle.
- Take the relaunch slowly. The ball parks on the paddle and waits. Move to where you want to be, look at what is left of the wall, then launch. There is no clock.
Questions players ask
Does the ball speed up when it breaks bricks?
No. Bricks and walls only redirect it, and every paddle contact resets it to the level's speed. Only clearing a full wall makes the next one faster, by about seven percent.
Are all bricks worth the same?
No — fifty, forty, thirty, twenty and ten points from the top row down. A full wall is 1,350 points, weighted heavily towards the rows you can only reach through a tunnel.
Mouse or keyboard?
The mouse places the paddle exactly where your pointer is, which makes contact points easier to choose. The keyboard moves at a fixed rate and is easier to stop precisely. Most players are more accurate with the mouse and more consistent with the keys.
Can the ball break two bricks at once?
No. One brick per frame, which is also why the ball never gets stuck inside the wall.
The short version
Contact point decides the shot, and the paddle acts curved: centre returns near-vertical, the tips return near sixty degrees. Arrive early and be stationary at contact, so you choose the shot instead of inheriting it.
