A short history of the coin-operated arcade cabinet
Everything we build on this site is descended from a wooden box with a coin slot. That is not sentimentality — it is a design lineage. The rules that make a browser game work in a single tab, with no tutorial and no account, were worked out by people who had to make a stranger understand a machine in a noisy room within a few seconds, and then choose to spend money on it.
This is a short, deliberately careful history of that machine: where it started, why the years around 1980 were so dense with famous cabinets, what the three-letter high score table was really for, what happened in 1983, and which parts of that design thinking are still doing work today. We have stuck to things that are well established, and where a detail is contested or we are unsure of it, we have left it out rather than guessing. Every company and game named below appears as a historical fact; Super Massive Games is not affiliated with any of them.
1971: Computer Space, and a machine nobody understood
The first coin-operated video game sold commercially was Computer Space, released in 1971 by Nutting Associates and created by Nolan Bushnell and Ted Dabney. It put a player-controlled rocket against flying saucers on a black-and-white screen, in a curved fibreglass cabinet that still looks like science fiction furniture today.
It was not a hit. The usual explanation, and one Bushnell himself has given over the years, is that the controls and objective were too much to absorb standing in a bar with a coin in your hand. Whether or not that was the whole story, the machine did not sell in the numbers its makers hoped for. What it did prove was mechanical: a video display, a coin mechanism and a game could live in one box in a public venue.
The lesson taken from that failure shaped everything after it. If the audience cannot be trained, the game has to be self-explanatory.
1972: Pong, and a business that suddenly existed
Bushnell and Dabney founded Atari in 1972. That year the company released Pong, engineered by Allan Alcorn, and it became the first arcade video game to succeed commercially at scale.
The design is famous for its restraint. Two paddles, one ball, a numeric score, and instructions that fit on one line of the cabinet: avoid missing ball for high score. There is no failure state to explain, no menu, no mode select. A person who had never seen a video game could watch someone else play for four seconds and know exactly what was going on — and, crucially, know that they could do it too.
Pong's success is what turned a curiosity into an industry. Once a coin-operated video cabinet was demonstrably profitable in ordinary venues, other manufacturers moved in, and the second half of the 1970s filled up with competition, imitations and steady technical improvement.
1978–1982: the dense years
The stretch from 1978 to 1982 produced a remarkable concentration of cabinets that people still recognise by name decades later. A rough tour of the ones we are confident about:
- 1978 — Space Invaders, Taito. Designed by Tomohiro Nishikado, it established the fixed shooter: a player locked to the bottom of the screen against a descending formation. Its influence on the format is hard to overstate.
- 1979 — Galaxian, Namco. A step forward in presentation, with true RGB colour and enemies that broke formation to dive at the player rather than only marching.
- 1979 — Asteroids, Atari. A vector-display game whose crisp white lines looked unlike anything raster hardware could produce, and which is usually credited with popularising the three-initial high score table.
- 1980 — Pac-Man, Namco. Designed by Toru Iwatani, released in Japan as Puck Man and licensed to Midway for North America. It broadened the arcade audience dramatically by replacing shooting with pursuit and evasion.
- 1980 — Battlezone, Atari. Vector graphics used for a first-person tank game, viewed through a periscope hood on the cabinet.
- 1981 — Donkey Kong, Nintendo. Designed by Shigeru Miyamoto, and the game that established Nintendo as a force outside Japan.
- 1981 — Centipede, Atari. Co-designed by Dona Bailey and Ed Logg, built around a trackball, and notable for reaching an audience the shooters had largely missed.
- 1981 — Tempest, Atari. Another vector cabinet, played on a spinner, with a tube-shaped playfield that no raster game of the period could have drawn.
- 1982 — Dig Dug, Namco and Q*bert, Gottlieb. Two very different demonstrations that the arcade had room for puzzle-flavoured action.
What is striking in hindsight is how quickly the vocabulary was invented. Lives, waves, extra lives at score thresholds, attract mode, difficulty that rises without ever being explained — nearly all of the grammar we still use was in place by about 1982, and it was invented under commercial pressure rather than in a design studio.
One detail from Space Invaders is worth singling out because it explains a mechanic still used today, including in our own Star Defense. The formation sped up as you destroyed it, and this was originally a consequence of the hardware: with fewer sprites to draw, the machine simply ran the loop faster. The side effect made the end of every wave tense, so it was kept deliberately by the games that followed.
The high score table was a social mechanism
It is easy to look at three letters on a black screen and see a technical limitation. It was that — memory and screen space were both scarce, and initials could be entered with the joystick and button already on the panel. But the table did something that no other part of the cabinet did: it made the machine remember that you had been there.
A cabinet in a laundromat or a bowling alley was a shared object. The score list at the top of the attract sequence was a running conversation between people who often never met. You could see what was possible on that machine, you could see that someone local had done it, and you could see exactly how far short you had fallen. The gap between your number and the top number was the entire marketing budget.
It also solved a problem that free-to-play designers rediscover constantly: how do you give a player a reason to come back to a game that has no ending? Arcade games mostly could not be finished. Instead of an ending, they offered a number, and the number was public. Three letters turned a solitary run into a claim.
Fact and interpretation, separated. Established history: Computer Space was released in 1971 by Nutting Associates; Atari released Pong in 1972; Space Invaders was released by Taito in 1978; Pac-Man was released by Namco in 1980; a severe downturn hit the North American video game business beginning in 1983. Our interpretation, offered as opinion and not fact: that the high score table functioned primarily as a social device rather than a scoring one, that the self-explanatory opening screen was the single most valuable idea of the era, and that the games of 1978–82 are best understood as user-interface design constrained by a coin slot. Where we quote numbers elsewhere on this site, they are estimates from our own play testing. We have not included revenue figures, cabinet production totals or coin counts for this period because we cannot verify them.
1983: the downturn
Beginning in 1983, the North American video game business went through a sharp and well-documented contraction. It is clearest in the home console market, where a flood of low-quality releases, badly overstocked retailers and a collapse in consumer confidence pushed a large number of publishers and hardware makers out of business within a couple of years.
Arcades were affected too. Revenues fell away from the peak of the boom years, operators closed, and the constant stream of new cabinets thinned. The causes usually cited are a mix: too many machines chasing the same customers, a lot of unremarkable products released to ride the wave, and home hardware that had become good enough to keep some players at home.
Two qualifications matter, and both are frequently dropped in casual retellings. First, this was a regional event. The business in Japan followed a different trajectory and did not experience the same collapse. Second, it was not the end of arcades — the format recovered later in the decade in a changed form, and the arcade industry continued producing significant machines long after 1983. What ended was a specific American boom, not the medium.
What that design still teaches browser games
Every game on this site is built to constraints that rhyme with the ones a cabinet designer faced. We cannot assume patience, we cannot assume an install, and we are one tab away from being closed. Four lessons from the coin-op years survive that translation almost unchanged.
The first screen has to be the game. A cabinet that needed explaining lost to one that did not. A browser game that opens on a menu, a settings panel or a wall of instructions is doing the same thing. This is why Snake starts on the first arrow key and Reaction Time starts on the first click.
A run should be short enough to lose cheerfully. A cabinet had to end your game and make you feel like the next one would go better. That is a pacing constraint, and it produces games where the restart is instant and the failure is legible — you know exactly which mistake ended it.
Difficulty should escalate without a difficulty menu. The boom-era answer was speed: the same rules, faster, until you break. It is honest, it needs no explanation, and it lets one game serve both a first-timer and someone who has played a hundred runs. Tower Stacker uses exactly this idea.
A number you can beat is worth more than a reward you are given. The score table worked because it was a comparison, not a prize. Nothing on this site involves prizes, money or wagering of any kind, and it does not need to — a personal best stored on your own device does the same job the top of a cabinet's list once did.
There is one lesson we deliberately did not carry over. Cabinets were designed to take a coin every few minutes, and plenty of their difficulty curves exist to shorten your run rather than to make it interesting. That pressure does not apply here, so where the historical design says "make them pay again", we have simply left the restart free and instant.
